Of Olympics 2012 and Old Memories

Stephen in the 200m event when he took the silver medal (circa 1976)

Since the London Olympics started, I've been glued to the TV watching all my favourite sports events.  I'm spoilt for choice because we have ten dedicated channels.  I'm not a sports buff but the conversations at home have revolved around the various events and winners.

I remember the 2000 Olympics vividly and that we had watched the closing ceremony in my neighbours home.  All of us had wondered where we would be when the next Olympic Games took place.  We would never know that this same group would have split up over three different continents in four different countries.

I almost cannot believe that 12 years have passed since that moment.

As always we remember that Patrick was with us then. Stephen relishes memories of George being a fantastic sprinter when he was a teenager.  If George was running a race, he would always get the gold medal.  No one could beat him.  It's a real pity that he never took up running professionally.

I don't know why but I get a lump in my throat when I see the Olympians giving their best for their country.  I'm not related to these people and yet I feel for them.

The Olympics does evoke lovely memories and moments.

  1. Just watched Jessica Ennis receive her gold for the heptathlon! And I know what you mean - because tears filled my eyes at her victory.

    1. I think it's a good quality to have. I used to be annoyed when my eyes tear up because of something or someone. As I grew older, I understood the reasons why it happens and I believe it has to do with what we have inside of us. And there's nothing to be ashamed of, either. :)
